Stone is a natural solid material that is formed naturally by the crystallization of minerals. There are thousands of types of stone; many have been used in construction and decoration throughout history. Most natural stone comes from quarries around the world, including Brazil, Canada, China, France, Greece, India, Italy, Mexico, the Middle East, Portugal, Spain, Taiwan, Turkey, and the United States.
The History of Stone (From Onyx France, Inc.)
“The minerals in stone came from the same liquid and gas minerals that formed the earth. The Earth developed as a massive body of gas and liquid minerals that slowly cooled and condensed to a solid core.
Through pressure, the Earth’s crust began to form and heavy minerals were forced down to the core of the Earth where they were trapped. As the crust got thicker, it squeezed around the inner core which created intense pressure and heat from within the Earth. Crystals and other solid forms began to grow from the mineral vapors that were being released.
As the Earth’s crust began to expand and erode, heat and pressure pushed the solid minerals up to the Earth’s surface which formed colossal rock beds. It took up to one-hundred million years to form some of these beds. Many of the beds are now used as quarries where the stone is mined.”
Products
Onyx France is suitable for residential and light commercial installations on floors and walls, depending on the specific product.
Marble/Quartzite
Marble is a softer stone, and it can etch. Quartzite is a harder stone and less likely to etch. However, quartzite is also more durable than marble. Therefore, if you want something that will last longer—quartzite might be the better option for your kitchen countertops!
Limestone
Limestone is a sedimentary rock that forms in oceans. It consists mainly of calcium carbonate, deposited as the calcareous remains of marine animals such as mollusks or corals. Limestone can be either crystalline (microcrystalline) or amorphous (non-crystalline).
Limestone is a popular material for kitchen countertops, bathroom vanities, and floor and wall surfaces.
Onyx
Onyx is a sedimentary rock made up of chalcedony bindings, a form of quartz that has been fused together by pressure and heat over a long period. Onyx tile is a stone that’s popular for its marble-like appearance. It’s often used in flooring, countertops, and walls because of its strength and durability.
Mother of Pearl
Mother of Pearl tile is a fun and dramatic choice for your bathroom or kitchen backsplash. It offers a variety of options, from natural to dyed tiles, that allow you to customize the look of your space. Mother of pearl tile is made from the inner shell of oysters. The natural iridescent color in each piece varies depending on its source, giving it a one-of-a-kind look.
Travertine
Travertine tile is a beautiful addition to any home. It is durable, easy to clean, and comes in many colors and patterns. Travertine tile can be a little cold underfoot and must be sealed when installed to achieve its polished look. Travertine tile backsplashes and flooring are great ways to utilize this tiling material.
Slate
Slate tile is a great way to add a unique look to your home. Slate tiles are made from natural stone and can be installed in both residential and commercial spaces.
